Max Mri (Mah Meri) 2017
Mah Meri is described as a mask of Malaysian aboriginal culture (Orang Asli or Proto Malay). Their everyday resources,are used to express the everyday life of Malaysian aboriginal culture through experience and as well to show the reflection of the aboriginal society. In my opinion, we are all once came from the aboriginal culture before humans gain knowledge .Therefore this aboriginal culture should not be considered as a minority society but as the oldest and most important culture in the Malaysian society as these people and the others before them experienced histories of the past while now we get to enjoy the peace in the country. We should appreciate this such culture as not only because of their love for nature or because people say so, but of their role in the Malaysian culture as a majority of the Malaysian society. Artist statement: My work focuses on environment and human reaction. In this piece, yellow colour is used to represent a young power /energy of the youth. Mah Meri mask links to the web represents that, actually we are connected to one other, whenever we are. As they progress, we progress. As they evolve, so are we. There is always a relationship. Because of them, we all, including them themselves, manage to evolve many things. In this painting, there are two types of leaf bones art structures, where one of them is dyed with colour. That represent how we influence one another through culture and traditions into the original culture (which is represented as the undyed leaf bones section in the painting). The ceramic-made web serves as a “bone” of our culture as we slowly transform from the inside, as depicted as a colour web within, while preserving the “bone” of the culture as it is the origin of the culture of Malaysia.
